Happy New Year!

New Year's Even Hat 2Yes, January 1st is a long ways off, but in many ways it feels like a new year has begun. I realize that not all of you who might be reading this live in my part of the world, but perhaps what I am going to share will apply to you in some way as well.

Here in Alberta our summers are relatively short. We have some nice days in May and June, and the fall can be enjoyable as well. But the reality is we rely a great deal on July and August for our really nice, summer weather. In my opinion I think this is why most things seem to quiet down around here. It is when we like to take our holidays, be outside more, and so not as much is happening in our companies and organizations. Most everyone I talk to, whether it is from oil & gas, or healthcare, or obviously those in education, mention how things are generally quiet during July and August compared to the rest of the year.

Which brings me to my opening comment. During the beginning of September you can start to feel things becoming busier. Parents are getting their kids back to school, universities and colleges are starting back up, and companies begin anticipating having everyone back from their summer activities and getting things rolling. There is more activity in our workplaces as projects beginning again and we all seem to expect to be doing more this time of year. It is like a new year is beginning, a fresh start of sorts.

If it was January 1st we would be talking about possibly making some New Year’s resolutions and laying out some goals for the coming year. To some degree I think this can be done in September as well. As you look forward to things picking back up as we move into fall perhaps you have a chance to consider what role you play in creating a great place to work. Maybe there are some team building elements to consider adding to the work day that would enhance your team’s functioning. Or, maybe you have had some time over the summer to think about the big picture of your team, company, or organization and now it is time to put some of those ideas into action. Whatever it is, I hope you find a reason to enjoy and take advantage of something of a new beginning. And as always, if there is anything I can do to help with that, please do not hesitate to ask.
