Life is Crazy Sometimes

Business centre Ramat Gan IsraelLife has been crazy lately.  I know most of us say this far too frequently, but I really cannot believe that we are heading into the middle of November already.  Where did the fall go?!  And I think the craziness of life can be particularly challenging for those of us who are easily distracted by shiny stuff, squirrels, or anything else that happens to move through our peripheral vision.

Over the past few weeks I have had to travel a little more than I usually do, and it eats up a lot of time.  I would like to say that I use the time sitting in an airport or on a plane effectively, but that is not always the case.  On my last trip however I actually buckled down and did some reading that I have wanted to catch up on.

18 Minutes: Find Your Focus, Master Distractions, and Get the Right Things Done by Peter Bregman is in the time management genre of books.   What I appreciated about Bregman’s thoughts is that not only does he give specifics and details, but spends time dealing with some overarching themes as well.  One thought that particularly resonated with me was the idea of figuring out what I really want to focus on and what is truly most important to me in the coming year.  Obviously, as you can tell by the comments I have sent out in the past, I am already wired this way to some degree, but it is good to hear it in someone else’s words from time to time.

I have no idea how or when it started, but my oldest daughter often says, ‘make good choices’ to me when we part ways.  Seems like something I am supposed to say to her, but there you have it.  Lately however there has been a new twist that my daughter started using and that I have latched on to.  Now when I drop my kids off for school or some other activity I will tell them, ‘remember who you are’ (yes, a quote from The Lion King).  Most of the time when I say this to them they just stare back at me blankly, like I am from another planet, but I am use to that from them.  Hopefully however they will think about it at some point during the day.  They are relatively early in their journey in figuring out who they are exactly, but never the less I like the saying – it is a good reminder for me and I hope it will be a good one for them.

When life feels like it is going 100 miles an hour, remembering who you are; what you stand for, what is truly most important to you, seem like rather important pieces to the puzzle.
